Energy savings for data centers with free online tool

A new online tool is helping overcome the data center’s energy zapping ways. The Green Grid, a global consortium of IT professionals, is helping organizations with their sustainability efforts by offering a free cooling tool.

As cooling generally accounts for more than half of the energy consumed running a data center, this new tool focuses on the estimated cost savings available with free air cooling and evaporative cooling. By harnessing the free cooling available, date centers can lower their energy consumption.

The tool works by using postal/zip codes to use actual energy rates. As well, the user can input specific variables such as the IT load and facility load. Currently this tool is available for users in North America, Europe and Japan with a focus on individual data centers.

Along with the free cooling tool, The Green Grid offers high-resolution maps of fresh air and water side free cooling for members. For nonmembers, low-resolution maps are also available.
